Searching of the Great Black-backed Gull

2026-01-26 | Andrew Simon

On Saturday, 24 January 2026, Vitalii Kazannyk reported: “Today, near Natalka Park, there was a Great Black-backed Gull among a flock of gulls.”Since this is far from the first record of the Great Black-backed Gull in Kyiv, the website has accumulated some information about the places where it has been observed. To review all these locations, we go to territory analytics, place a marker approximately in the center of Kyiv, and choose a circle radius that covers the entire city. Then we set the date range from 1 December to 29 February and look at the result. In the table of species, we find the Great Black-backed Gull and tick the box next to it. Підсумки 2025 року

2026-01-18 | Andrew Simon

Results of 2024

2026-01-11 | Andrew Simon

Another year has passed… And once again, the results of the Big Year haven't been finalized even for the previous one...So, allow me first to summarize the results of the 2024 season, the third year under conditions of full-scale war and losses. (And don't let me postpone the 2025 results indefinitely again). Despite the circumstances and thanks to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, this year the site's participants managed to record and publish photos of 312 bird species, which is 10 more than the previous year. This result was made possible thanks to the work of 58 site participants (as well as those who commented, liked, or simply viewed the images, motivating photographers to share their photos). The winners of the Big Year 2024 contest are:I place – SHEREMET Oleh and 266 photographed bird species for the year II place – SAMOKHIN Ihor and 259 photographed species for the year III place – LOBODA Yehor and 225 photographed species for the year.Sincerest congratulations to the winners [...... read more ]

Москва, Царицынские пруды

According to available data, this is the third observation of the species in Russia and the first photo on the website. The gull was discovered by E. Shmeleva on 23 October 2025, in Moscow at the Tsaritsyno Ponds. For the first time, the Ring-billed Gull, which inhabits North America and regularly visits Europe, was tracked by a tracker to Nizhny Novgorod in 2022, where its nesting with a Common Gull was recorded. The following year, it was also found there.
